coming to the Southwest [20 Jul 2006|01:44pm]

[ mood | inquisitive ]

My partner and I are going on a cruise to the Mexican Riviera in March '07. After the cruise we plan on staying with friends in Bakersfield, CA that Sunday night (3-25-07) and then renting a car and heading out to Arizona and New Mexico. We plan on moving to either state in a few years.. not real sure of the move time line yet, but we are taking this opportunity to check out the area a bit more. We plan on taking 58 to Barstow, then I40 to Flagstaff with a side trip to the Grand Canyon, then continuing on to Albuquerque. Then we'll head south on I25 to Las Cruces, then west on I10 to Tucson, then up to Phoenix - Tempe, Mesa, Peoria, Glensdale area.... After that around April 3rd or 4th we'll take a flight out of Phoenix back to Maine.

We'd like to hear about the best places to go/ live, what there is to do for recreation, jobs, living arrangements etc...

Talk to me here or email me privately if you prefer.

Make A Difference Day [29 Sep 2005|07:47pm]

...is three weeks away. THREE WEEKS.

I need:

People to hang posters/deliver flyers

By door prizes, I mean anything and everything: Services, items, gift certificates, whatever. By volunteers, I mean people who are willing to help before, during, and after the event as runners (to get items we may need) setup/breakdown for the events, and so on. Tell your friends, tell your coworkers, tell people you know who have mad hookups, I need freebie stuff to hand out at the event. Seriously!

The bottom line is, though, the most important thing everyone can do is participate. Come give blood, join the Registry, meet the guys from Get-Well Gamers, come to the Concert that night, walk a puppy, whatever.

Help Hurricane Evacuees with entertainment! [06 Sep 2005|03:28pm]

Get-Well Gamers, Chatterbox Videogame Radio and Las Cruces Can! are teaming up to help vicitims of Hurricane Katrina.

We are looking to supply:

televisions, dvd/video players, gaming systems, videos/dvds, games, surge protectors and batteries to long-term shelters. We're starting in our own areas (California, Arizona, New Mexico and west Texas) and will branch out according to supply, information, and volunteers.

If you have any of the above listed items and would like to donate them, contact:

Please put "Shelter Donation" or "Hurricane Katrina" in the tagline so we know what it's for.

If you are interested in helping make contact, setup systems, or doing some footwork for us in your area, please email us with your name, contact info, location, and long-term shelter locations in your area.

For you non-techie people, Las Cruces Can! and good_ideas are encouraging people to make "Busy Boxes" for your local shelters. Items you may want to include in "Busy Boxes" are:

Playing cards, card games, board games (with all pieces and rules, please!), coloring books, coloring supplies, play-doh, duplo-style building blocks, blank envelopes, lined paper, pens/pencils, simple toys like balls, jump ropes, and little handheld games like rubiks cubes.

We encourage you to contact your shelters BEFORE dropping off any item, and to ask what kind of items they may need. Try to donate what they request before you donate anything else.

PLEASE take this and repost it to groups, your personal blog, and even forward it in your email if you'd like. Just make sure that the email addresses above stay in it so people can contact us!

Thank you, everyone!!

Here are some links and info regarding Hurricane Katrina refugees and aid:

News on the Astrodome, with links on how to help locally and nationwide

If you have the ability and the desire, here are some places were you can offer space in your home to people seeking shelter:

Katrina Housing click on it's "links" page to find places that are compiling addresses of people to send clothings/toys/goods to.

Operation Share Your Home

NOLA has turned into a flashpoint for people to communicate. You can find lots of info here.

Homeflood.org another match site.

In a cut-n-paste form:

If you wish to donate cash to assist relief organizations in helping with Katrina victims, please use FEMA's list in order to be sure your money goes where you intend it to:
>a href="http://www.fema.gov/news/newsrelease.fema?id=18473"> FEMA info site </a>

Several sites are asking for transportation to get refugees to their donated homes. If you have the time/ability or know someone who does, you may offer your assistance as a Driver. I'm not sure how it works, but I'm sure the agencies could help pair you up. It could be as simple as driving from Houston to Dallas or Austin, or if you're taking a trip to Los Angeles and you're passing through a refugee-heacy area, you may see if you can swing a passenger or two to help them get where they need to go.

Network for Good has many links broken down by category, so you can help in a way of your choosing.

Tomorrow, many of us return to work. If we ask and band together with our coworkers, friends and families, we can do a large amount of good. Please consider asking your circles to donate to charities that are helping the victims of Katrina.

As always, questions, comments and the additions of your own links are welcome!

Las Cruces Can! now has a bank account. You can even Paypal to it: LasCrucesCan@gmail.com

We'll be starting production on flyers and promo materials in the next two weeks. I'll need helpers to distribute flyers. If you work in a high profile location, or if you know tons of people, or even if you're just willing to putz around town with a roll of scotch tape and determination, please let me know.

Difference Day Booth [20 Jun 2005|11:12am]

On July 9th, I’ll need a few volunteers to help man the Las Cruces Can! Booth at the Farmer’s Market. We’ll have a booth from 8:30am-Noon, so I’ll need you anytime from 8am-12:30pm, in at least 1 hour blocks.

We’ll have information and flyers for the groups, spreading education, and letting people know about the events in October.

If you’re interested, call or email quickly so I can start penciling everyone in. Email Punke01@aol.com or LasCrucesCan@gmail.com

If you have not volunteered for me before, I’d like for you to find a bit of time to sit down with me for some basic informational training & education.

Please note that in order to volunteer, you must be willing to participate in the activities in October. I can’t have people pitching blood donation, NMDP registry, organ donation or the other events if they refuse to give or join themselves. If you would give, but you cannot due to medical/donation restrictions, that’s okay. “I’m scared of needles” and the like do not count and will not be accepted.

You can also keep an eye on the Las Cruces Can! website.

Thank you!

Make A Difference UPDATE [20 May 2005|12:32pm]

Good news today.

It looks like the Roadrunner Buses will be FREE on Make A Difference Day. No matter who you are, where you're going, you can use the bus and it will be free. Final confirmation will be forthcoming.

My first Gold level ($1000) sponsor sounds happy about what we can offer. I'll need to check a couple of things, but it looks like we'll give them what they'd like and we'll get our first $1,000.

I finally got ahold of someone who may be able to help me with my DBA/Assumed Name form. Left a voicemail message, and hopefully will hear back today.

One of my printers called. He can give me 588 shirts, purple/yellow on front, black on back, labor, print, shipping and delivery for.....$2.80/shirt. That's the cost of the plain shirt. He's giving us the labor, job, setup and s/h & in-town delivery for free. Total will come out to about $1,650.

I called the El Paso UBS office and left a message for D., the director. We worked together last year. I passed on the promo item info for squeezie platlets and drops, which we're getting a 15% discount on. That way, he may be able to pull that out of his own funds, and any that we don't give away can go back to area centers for future freebies.

I have two weekends at the Farmer's & Craft Market for a charitable booth. We'll be having a raffle for large items, and selling donated items/services from. By donated items, I mean everyone who gives something. Haircuts, oil changes, comps, massage, a sitting portrait, meals, items, you name it. If you have a service or item you're up to donating, contact me immediately. The first day is July 9th. The second is October 15th. I'll be handing out flyers for the charities involved and trying to raise money for the event as well. Want more details? Ask me! The second Market Day will be October 15th. That will be a blitz day for the actual event.

As I get flyers and posters, I'll need a 'street team' of sorts to deliver and hang them. Don't worry; I'll give you places that are close to your home or work, and will provide you with names, business hours, and any other info you'll need. I'll also need people to simply spread the word: tell your friends, tell you family, tell any organizations you belong to, just tell everyone. Word of mouth is *the best* method we have of reaching our to people.

Now, it's another waiting game as other Sponsors get ahold of me and we start nailing down more donations and the like. I'll keep you updated.

Promotion & Volunteers [16 May 2005|06:57am]

If no corporate/business sponsors are found, we may need some volunteers to help out with some grassroot-type fundraisers. If you or a group you're with would like to help, email LasCrucesCan@gmail.com or Punke01@aol.com and we'll get you matched up.

Starting in September, we're going to need volunteers to hand posters, deliver flyers, and get the word out in general about our events.

Welcome! [08 May 2005|10:09am]

Welcome to the Las Cruces Can! community, for the Las Cruces Can! Make A Difference Day events. We'll be posting times/locations of the events happening around time, volunteer opportunities, needs/wants, and general discussion.

With the help of tons of people in the Cruces area, we'll have a great event. If you're curious as to exactly what Make A Difference Day is, check out the website: official website with information.

In 2003, our event helped the National Marrow Donor Program .

In 2004, our event helped the National Marrow Donor Program , United Blood Services , Locks of Love, Children's Miracle Network , UNICEF , and worked in conjunction with the Junior League of Las Cruces to help their Literacy Fair.

In 2005, we hope to help all of the same groups as the previous years, and are expanding to include the Community of Hope umbrella here in town, Safe Haven and the Dona Ana Humane Society. We'll have events at a dozen locations around town, and will need volunteers to help with different steps of the events. Most of all, we'll need to get the word out and educate people on what we're doing, and how it helps others.

Keep an eye out here for information, requests, and conversation!
